ADSL2+ common questions
What is ADSL2+?
ADSL2+ is a type of Broadband that reaches extraordinary speeds of up to 24mbps. That’s up to 180 times faster than Dialup and up to 40 times faster
than ADSL1!
Important Disclaimer: while the maximum line speed is the maximum port speed enabled at the exchange level (24Mbps), actual line and download
speeds for each customer will vary and is dependent on factors such as; How far you live from the local telephone exchange, the configuration and quality of your phone
line, quality of your Broadband ADSL modem and line filter, the number and type of services being used in your neighbourhood, general Internet usage and load levels,
interference from outside sources, your computer’s hardware and software set up and the configuration of any computer you are trying to access.

Changing Plans common questions
What contract and setup fee applies for changing plans?
You may change your plan at any time provided you follow these terms:
- Allow approximately 2 to 3 days for the change of plans to be complete.
- If you are still within a contract term, there is no extension to your minimum contract term.
- If you are changing service types (for eg. from an ADSL1 plan to an ADSL2+ plan), you are required to pay the applicable Setup Fee and begin a new Contract. You will also need to pay the Disconnection Fee ONLY if you are still within a contract term. If you are within an ADSL1 contract term (or still within 6 months of registering for ADSL1), you will need to pay the $99 Disconnection Fee. If you are within an ADSL2+ contract term, you will need to pay the $275 Disconnection Fee.
- A $10 fee applies if changing plans on the same speed or a $55 fee applies if changing plans to a different ADSL1 speed.
How does the billing work for changing plans?
When your plan change has been completed, you will be charged for
the cost and download allowance of the new plan based on a pro-rated amount until your next monthly billing date, minus the cost of your old plan based on a pro-rated amount.

Yes, you can purchase an Extra Quota Block by sending an email to us requesting it.
NerdPhone common questions
What’s NerdPhone?
NerdPhone is our VOIP service and it’s a great alternative to a standard phone service due to the fantastic savings you can get. We offer this service as an
optional add-on to your ADSL1 Plan.
Can I get NerdPhone?
Yes, provided you have a SuperNerd ADSL Plan speed of at least 512/128K.
What do I need to get NerdPhone?
SuperNerd sells 2 types of VOIP Devices:
- ATA (Analogue Telephone Adaptor) unit for those already with a broadband modem/router:
We sell the Linksys PAP2T for $88
- Or you can get an all-in-one VOIP/ADSL modem/router.
We sell the Netcomm NB9WMAXX for $250
What’s so good about NerdPhone?
- Cheap local calls
- National calls are NOT timed! Pay one flat rate for all National calls
- A low per minute rate for calls to mobiles
- Pay no Monthly Cost for the Starter Plan, just pay for the calls you make
- Get an additional 3GB of downloads each month with the Saver Plan, which you can use for your Internet or Phone
Is there a Contract for NerdPhone?
You can choose a 0 month contract OR commit to a 12 month contract on the NerdPhone Saver Plan and receive a $35 discount off a Linksys PAP2T or a
$50 discount off a Netcomm NB9WMAXX.
What is needed to use NerdPhone?
The basic requirements are:
- A SuperNerd Broadband connection capable of 128K uploads. A connection with 64K upload will work but may result in reduced call quality.
As we cannot commit to the quality on a 64K upload connection, NerdPhone is not available on a 256K/64K SuperNerd Broadband connection.
- A VOIP Device; this might come in the form of a standalone ATA (Analogue Telephone Adaptor) unit for those already with a broadband modem/router
or it might be an all-in-one VOIP/ADSL modem/router. Alternatively, a VOIP handset can be connected directly to a LAN or ADSL modem/router.
- A normal analogue telephone handset (or a VOIP handset – see above)
- A PSTN line for broadband and also for emergency fall over in case the broadband connection is unavailable for any reason.
VOIP Devices purchased from SuperNerd are pre configured and you only need to plug in the cables for the service to work; it’s very easy and simple.
Who is this service designed for?
NerdPhone is a VOIP service currently designed for use by home users. A normal broadband connection with 128K or greater upload speed can allow up to
2 simultaneous calls to be made (depending on the VOIP ATA FXS ports available).
I am not a SuperNerd user so can I get NerdPhone?
At the date of writing this FAQ sheet, anybody without a SuperNerd Broadband service cannot get a NerdPhone service. The reason for this is because we need
to ensure consistent high call quality and we cannot be confident (nor control the quality) of any broadband service not provided by SuperNerd.
What happens if I cancel my SuperNerd Broadband service;
can I still keep my NerdPhone service and VOIP telephone number?
At the date of writing this document (13 August 2007), we are unable to provide you with a NerdPhone service if your SuperNerd Broadband service is
cancelled for any reason, This means you will lose any VOIP telephone number attached to your NerdPhone service.
Benefits of NerdPhone common questions
What benefits are there in moving to VOIP?
The greatest benefit is in the ability to slash the cost of your telephone bills! NerdPhone provides extremely low call rates within
Australia and also offers amazingly low rates for calls to international destinations.
Click here to compare our NerdPhone call rates to normal telephone call charges. The figures speak for themselves!
What benefits are there in choosing NerdPhone over other VOIP providers?
When you chose NerdPhone, you get 3GB extra added to your monthly broadband plan before shaping occurs. If you choose any other VOIP provider such as
Engine, Skype or MyNetPhone, not only do you miss out on the extra GB downloads, the VOIP calls you make will actually eat into your broadband plan’s
monthly download quota!
It is even worse when you are on a Telstra or Optus broadband service because their plans count upload traffic to the Internet which means any VOIP calls
you make will consume eat into your monthly traffic quota even faster!
Additionally, because NerdPhone is a service provided over your SuperNerd Broadband service, we maintain full control over all aspects that affect the quality
of your VOIP call. Other VOIP providers have no ability to control the most important part of a VOIP service and that is the Broadband service itself!
How much does a NerdPhone account cost?
We keep things easy with 2 simple NerdPhone Plans to choose from. Click here for more info.
Can I have more than 1 NerdPhone account?
You can link multiple NerdPhone services to a single SuperNerd broadband account but you cannot link a single NerdPhone service to multiple SuperNerd
broadband accounts.
If you are linking multiple NerdPhone Saver plans to a single SuperNerd broadband account, your will benefit from the cumulative effect of the
additional 3GB download per plan.
For example if you want 2 indial telephone numbers and you subscribe to 2 NerdPhone Saver Plans, your broadband account will receive an increase of 6GB to
it’s monthly download quota.
Applying for NerdPhone common questions
I’m ready to slash my phone bill and sign up to NerdPhone – what do I do now?
It’s really easy to get started and you’ll be saving in no time! Follow the simple steps found here.
How can I pay?
We can automatically debit your Credit Card or Bank Account.
How NerdPhone works common questions
What sort of quality can a customer expect?
NerdPhone is designed so that you will rarely notice the difference between a VOIP call and a normal call made over a PSTN service.
This is because all VOIP calls are carried out to the normal PSTN using least hop and least latency network path routing. In short, you an expect toll-quality
calls on most occasions.
Very importantly, NerdPhone uses the G.729 codec to compress VOIP packets and G.711 for failover. For those technically minded, G.729 is the best compression
codec for VOIP at the moment and reduces the bandwidth requirement to provide quality calls. Many of our competitors, in an effort to reduce costs, do not use
G.729 and rely on G.711 or G.723 only.
How much bandwidth can I expect VOIP to consume?
The amount of bandwidth consumed will depend on the length of the call and the frequency of your conversation during the call. The following table provides
a rough estimate of bandwidth consumption during a normal conversation without pause.
| CODEC NEGOTIATED |
Kilobytes per minute |
Megabytes per minute |
| G.711 |
654 |
0.654 |
| G.729 |
234 |
0.234 |
Therefore a 5 minute call will consume roughly 3.27 MB (G.711) and 1.17 MB (G.729).
Does SuperNerd support LNP (Local Number Portability)?
At this stage we do not provide LNP. This means we will provide you with a brand new number if you sign up for the NerdPhone Starter or NerdPhone Saver plans.
Do I get a number for inbound calls?
All NerdPhone plans come with a VOIP number that begins with 0550. This number can be used for inbound calls however it cannot be tracked by the 000
emergency services as the number is not bound to any geographic location.
A geographically bound number can by provided for an additional $4.50 a month (Metro number) and $14.50 a month (Regional number)
How would an Internet outage effect my VOIP service?
In the event of your Internet service going down, your NerdPhone VOIP service will be effected. Your VOIP Device may still allow you to make phone calls via
any handsets plugged into it, but you will not be utilising your NerdPhone VOIP service, you will in actual fact be dialling into your PSTN connection.
Therefore you will be billed by your Phone Provider for any phone calls you make during any Internet outages.
- The Linksys PAP2T will NOT allow you to dial out via any handsets plugged into it using your PSTN connection
during an internet outage.
- The Netcomm NB9WMAXX will allow you to dial out via any handsets plugged into it using your PSTN connection
during an internet outage.
- If you do not have one of these above VOIP devices please consult your hardware vendor.
Hardware for NerdPhone common questions
Do I need to buy a new VOIP handset or can a standard analogue telephone be used?
Analogue telephone handsets can be used and there is no need to purchase a VOIP handset unless you want a new high tech looking handset for your home or office!
The analogue telephone handset is simply plugged into an FXS port in the ATA using a normal RJ11 cable (the ones used for all normal PSTN telephone handsets).
What type of hardware is sold and supported by SuperNerd?
Due to the wide range of available VOIP hardware in the market, SuperNerd can only support the configuration of the hardware directly purchased from it.
These include the following models which have been tested for quality and ease of configuration:
- Linksys PAP2T (1 LAN, 2 FXS): $88.00
- Netcomm NB9WMAXX (1 WAN, 4 LAN, 2 FXS, 1 FXO): $250
If you have a non-SuperNerd supported VOIP router/modem/ATA we can provide you with the required information but cannot help you with step-by-step configuration.
All new SuperNerd VOIP router/modem/ATA units are pre-configured with settings and DHCP so you simply plug the unit into your existing network and you will be
ready to go!
The hardware to set up NerdPhone is too expensive!
It might seem expensive to start with but if you count the savings from reducing your normal telephone bill, you will see a return on your initial investment
really quickly. If you reduce your phone bill by even just $20.00 a month then the hardware pays for itself in just few months. After that, you’ll reap
the rewards of ongoing savings!
SuperNerd will also provide discounts on device purchases if you sign up to a 12 months contract for a NerdPhone Starter or Saver plan (see below).
I already have an existing Broadband modem/router and I really don’t want to pay for another VOIP modem/router,
what should I do?
There are several options available that will allow you to enjoy the cheap NerdPhone call rates without having to pay a large upfront cost again for the
necessary hardware.
- You could simply buy an ATA depending on the number of telephone handsets you wish to connect for VOIP. Buy the V100 if you only need to connect 1
handset or buy the PAP2T if you have 2 handsets.
- You can significantly reduce the cost of a new ATA or VOIP modem/router (if you want to buy a brand new one) by committing to a 12 months contract on
either one of the NerdPhone Starter or NerdPhone Saver plans. The discounted amount off the purchase price depends on the Plan that you commit to for
12 months.
If you purchase a NerdPhone Saver Plan and commit to a 12 month Contract you will get the following discount depending on what Device you purchase from
SuperNerd:
$35 Discount off the price of a Linksys PAP2T, if you have the NerdPhone Saver Plan and choose a 12 month Contract
$50 Discount off the price of a Netcomm NB9WMAXX, if you have the NerdPhone Saver Plan and choose a 12 month Contract
If I have a VOIP handset how does that connect to the ATA?
You don’t need an ATA if you have a VOIP handset. The VOIP handset uses the RJ45 port which can be connected directly to a hub or switch port in your network
or VOIP modem/router unit using an RJ45 cable.

Dialup common questions
What is Dialup internet?
It’s a form of internet access that uses a modem to transmit digital data over telephone wires, reaching a maximum internet speed of up to 56K.
Each time you connect to the internet, or even attempt to make a connection to the internet, you will be charged a local call cost by your Phone Provider.
Can I dial from anywhere in Australia, at the cost of a local call?
Yes you can, provided you are not paying a higher rate for local calls, for eg. if you are staying in a motel. This is why the SuperNerd Dialup plans are
such great value. Most other ISP’s will charge you a premium on top for "Roaming" capabilities, but with SuperNerd, you can roam anywhere you like
and still pay only a local call for connecting to the internet.
You can also view your emails from anywhere by logging into our handy WebMail service.
Can I use the phone at the same time as the internet?
No. You can not make or receive phone calls while connected to the internet.
What plans does SuperNerd have?
We offer Flat Rate Plans and Block Plans. If you’re a heavier internet user and don’t want to have to worry about how much you use, then we recommend
the Flat Rate Plans. Otherwise you can purchase a Block Plan for light internet use.
How long does it take to set up a Dialup account?
Setting up a Dialup account is quick and easy. Simply register online and pay by Credit Card to have your account instantly activated.
Why is SuperNerd’s Dialup better?

CURRENT SPECIAL: If you want to upgrade your SuperNerd Dialup plan to a SuperNerd ADSL1 plan, pay just $55 for the Setup Fee, normally $115.

Flat Rate Plans common questions
Are the Flat Rate Plans completely unlimited?
Yes. All SuperNerd Flat Rate plans are TOTALLY unlimited which means no hidden fees. All plans have a 5 hours hard session limit to ensure fair usage.
How do the Flat Rate Plans work?
Payments are upfront for the subscribed period and all subscriptions renew automatically until you tell us otherwise. The longer your subscription period,
the greater the discount provided to you.

You receive one month of free unlimited internet access on your first subscription period as a gift and is valid only for new customers. Subsequent
renewals are at $42 per 3 months.
Block Plans common questions
When do the Block Plans expire?
They expire after you’ve used up 30 or 60 hours depending on which plan you have chosen. If you don’t use up all your hours within a
12 month period, the unused hours will expire after 12 months.
What happens after my Plan has expired?
Whether you have a Flat Rate plan or a Block plan, your plan will automatically renew for the same plan and price. If you want to cancel your subscription
renewal you’ll need to contact us in writing or in the online Member’s section at our website.
How will I know how many hours I have used?
